Sama/Barnyard Millet Dhokla

Hello Foodies,

What is sama or barnyard millet? It is known as kuthiravali in Tamil, waraichi tandul in Marathi, mordhan (sanwa) in MP, samo in Gujarati. These millets are gluten free and high in fiber. Sama is consumed during Hindu fasting in India. Whenever we keep fasting, I like to make sama dhokla. It is very easy recipe but has delicious taste. Dhokla are steamed and this dish only need 2-3 drops of oil, so it is good for health too. Here is how I make it.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Cooking Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sama
2 tbsp yogurt
1/2 cup water
1 finely chopped green chili
Salt to taste
1 tsp sesame seeds
Pinch of cumin and black pepper powder
2-3 drops oil to grease thali (plate)

Procedure:

1. In a mixing bowl, mix together sama, yogurt and water. Mix well. You will feel the mixture is too watery but don’t worry water will get soaked when you steam dhokla. Keep aside for 5 to 6 hours.

2. When ready to steam dhokla, add green chili and salt. Mix well.

3. Heat steamer or pressure cooker with about 1 1/2 inches of water. Bring it to boil.

4. Pour batter into greased plate sprinkle sesame seeds, cumin powder and black pepper powder on top. Put thali in steamer, cover with lid and steam for about 15 minutes or till done. Turn off the heat and remove dhokla plate and let it cool for some time.

5. Cut dhokla into square pieces. Serve warm dhokla with plain yogurt or cucumber raita on side.

This dish is so simple yet very satisfying. It only has 2-3 drops of oil. It is gluten free and nut free. This can be served as a breakfast or snack with afternoon masala chai. Pack it for the lunch and microwave before eating. Hope you enjoy making and eating it.
